Are you saying that cleaning a bit of varnish off the throat and butterfly valve will fix things? I would have thought that the problem(s) would lie inside the electronics portion of the unit.....i.e worn/dirty surfaces on a rheostat (sp?)?

It could help for sure but if the ETM is going, it's going.
The reason Matt posted this is because often times the dealer won't do anything about the ETM until they clean it for you at a substantial loss to your wallet. If you can go into the dealer, having already done this and the ETM is still acting up, they've ran out of excuses to take your money before the ETM warranty kicks in. However, they are a clever bunch. A guy posting in the ETM section was about to be taken by the dealer for $900 do deal with a PCV system on his S60 that they claim is causing the ETM issue.
We have a write-up on how to replace the PCV system on our site as well.

I just followed this procedure on my 2000 S80 (with 276,000 mi) and it worked great! The idle was hunting (dropping a few hundred rpm and surging back again in cycles every few seconds). After reading the ETM threads, I was very worried that the ETM was going (I'm well past the extended warranty period). Now it looks like I'm good to go for a while. Thanks for the information!

hello guys,
can you please add some pictures regarding how to get to ETM like one of those vega's write up's?
it would be so helpful, i'd like to clean my ETM as well but I am new to this car (2000 s80 t6) so don't feel comfortable doing it without a good guidance..
thanks...

2002+ 2.9L i6 has the ETM right next to MAF. It's even easier to clean.

Here's a better (and more recent) pic of my 2003 2.9L non-turbo. I'm also using some quick release hose clamps they sell at Pep Boys -- I hate that place but they got the cool clamps.
I'm so glad I don't have to mess with all those hoses like you turbo guys.

As a side note, the problem I'm having with my 2003 that inspired me to use quick release hose clamps was apparently addressed in the 2004 model year, see pic below. The oil/fume separator/trap occasionally burps up oil that builds up in the flexible rubber tubing between MAF and ETM. Then under hard acceleration it sometimes takes a big gulp of it, fouling plugs and O2/lambda sensors. In the 2004 model they added another hose to drain that exact area. What a coincidence.
I'm wondering if I can adapt the 2004 design to my 2003. I think I just need to swap two parts, everything else looks identical.

If anyone is parting out a 2004 S80 2.9 liter inline six non-turbo, I need the following four items:
1) rubber tubing between ETM and MAF with nipple my 2003 is missing
2) plastic T connector that nipple plugs into
3&4) two small hoses on both sides of the T connector
I've highlighted the parts in pic below. Don't need the clamps on left hose (cut them off if you like) but could use the green one you squeeze on hose to the right. Email me at admin @ 4crito.com with quote.
EDIT: Or feel free to leave the hoses connected if it's easier for you. Shipping box will have to be bigger and I'm going to take it all apart anyways, but whatever... I'm not picky.

Here's a close-up of a 2003. I believe the 2002 2.9L NA is identical, so the retrofit should work for that model year too. Just remove two parts and replace with four (highlighted above). Should take all of 15 minutes.
