Are new valves so hard to obtain that used and Skandix are our only options?

What does a machine shop do during a head rebuild? Could valves be installed at home as a DIY project (with special tools)?
Used are just perfectly fine if the machine shop does a valve job. Valves can definitely be lapped at home but I haven't done it.

Machine shop cleans and resurfaces head, cleans and laps in valves, installs valve stem seals. You get back a piece of aluminum art.

Well, I called a lot of places today and boy is this going to be pricey. I got quotes from $4,000 for a head rebuild to $7,000 for an engine swap! These prices made me reconsider a DYI route.

I did finally track down a machine shop that says they can check the head for me for $200 if I bring it to them out of the car. If they have to rebuild, then we are looking at another $300. That sounds like the most workable solution.

I'l going to start pricing out a head rebuild gasket set and some replacement valves. Everyone is warning me about aftermarket valve seals. I noticed valve seals are included in rebuild kits from FCP Euro. Are the seals with the Victor Reinz or Elwis sets also suspect?

Finally the machine shop I spoke with told me to check my hydraulic lifters. What are the observation on the service life of those?
It looks like I am about to embark on a DYI head swap with a rebuild from a local machine shop.
I am anti-head gasket kit, they are convenient but false economy. The cam seals are usually junk. Valve seals it is not worth taking a risk on.

Buy the valve stem seals as a set viewtopic.php?t=71962.
Decide on a reputable head gasket supplier, that one may be tough I have always bought from Volvo but may be NLA.
Spark plug tube seals get from Volvo.
Four cam seals get Corteco from FCP.
Other misc gaskets FCP: Intake and exhaust, throttle body, water pipe, that may be all of them unless you do timing and PCV now too.
Anaerobic gasket maker get Permatex.
Head bolts aftermarket is fine.

So, I'm wondering if I should replace the hydraulic lifters while I'm in there? Is there a good way to test them?
Do the lifters commonly have issues? Mine are the originals (25 years old) so I want to be mindful of that.

Last question is related to the timing belt tensioner with the "grenade pin". Can you reuse it or do I have to get a new one? I'm asking because my car has only gone about 30K miles since the timing belt replacement which included all the idler pulleys and tensioners. It seems a waste to replace them all after such a short interval.

What you might want to look at is the price of each lifter. Discounted from a dealer up here in Canada they are $65+ CDN EACH!!! You will have 24 to replace or nearly $1650 up here CDN including taxes (around $1200 US).

Maybe there is somewhere they may be cheaper?

I would not worry about the hydraulic tensioner. If you take care slowly compressing it, it should be good to go again. The rest should also be ok. Only proviso would be if the engine seized, say with a dropped valve or broken belt.

Neil, luckily for us in the USA (I guess), I can get a complete set of 20 Volvo lifters for $210 USD (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... v70-270866) . I just ordered it from FCP Euro.

I also got new valves and various timing belt bits. I am also purchasing a few new tools in preparation for this - angle gauge, an inch pound torque wrench, gasket sealer, and foam roller.

This should be an interesting journey.

I wish you luck on this journey! Heading out tomorrow to look to see if I can help a father/son duo looking to transfer an 04 C70 motor into a manual 00 S70 base and keep the manual trans. Should be interesting!

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I'm planning to document it quite thoroughly.
