There a 2 valves inside the Mann, Mahle or Bosch filters:

1. Anti-drain back valve: basically a rubber membrane to prevent oil from draining back to the engine when the car is shut off.
Great idea when the oil filter faces downward, such as 1990 Volvo 240 B230F engine.
But it is basically a useless feature in the 850 series because the oil filter faces upward, so there is always oil inside the filter.

2. "By-pass" valve is a spring-load valve.
When the filter element is clogged (from neglected long oil interval or sludge!), the valve opens up to allow oil to flow through.
So unfiltered oil is better than no oil.

Google for pictures of oil filter and you will see.

- Mann
- Mahle
- Bosch
