I tried loosening the bolts and it gave me some play but so not enough. Back they go. Now will el cheapo eBay merchant take them back?

1.6mm difference is nothing.
They must fit.Call someone to force the tailgate up a little more while you clip them in place.

A broom handle under tailgate will lift it enough; get creative. 
I purchased some no name branded struts from eBay for my P2 XC70 and they had small removable steel wires built into them that made fittng them a cinch. However they are overpressurised and almost smack out a tooth every time they lift.

Those are security wires(clips)i mentioned in some previous post.They must be removed.precopster wrote:...they had small removable steel wires built into them that made fittng them a cinch.
You can re-install them after you clip new struts in place.
