When the crank is on the mark, you can rotate the cams all over the place, on purpose or by accident. Just put the cams back in alignment (time) before you put the belt on.
The key is to put the crank on the mark and keep it there. Good luck!

So I have started to take things apart, but I have run into a bit of a problem. I cannot get the cam gears to line up to the factory marks. The crankshaft is perfectly lined up with the oil pump mark, but the cam gears are far away from their marks. Should I just mark this point as the new timing mark? the engine does not seem to have any issues turning over.

No!
How do you mean they will not line up...with the old belt not yet removed?
Do you have a crank with one or two grooves?

Old belt has not been taken off yet and the factory stamping on the gears will not line up with the marks in the timing cover, and my crank is the one with two marks.

Is your crank lined up between those two grooves?

Nevermind, I am a dumbass. I realized I was turning it over too much. I did not realize the marks were midway through the pistons stroke. They are lined up now.

Could be that last time the belt was replaced somebody missed a few teeth on cams.Tollerance is up to three teeth. After that, game is over.
Line up on crank and remove the belt.Line up cams like they should be and install new belt.
