The wires are a good suggestion, had to do the same on both cars.

Does the ETM perform the self test on powering up? Whine for 8 seconds, then quiet?

Check the induction pathway and intake manifold for leak on a turbo car

Maybe time to look to other areas. When did you last change your ignition switch? When you get the rough running, pull over, and try wiggling the key in the switch with the engine running.

Have you check all the heavy wiring: battery, alternator and starter? Does the starter drag? Check the earths are clean and that they are all functioning as they should. Most importantly, pop the top off the main fuse box (the kidney shaped one in front of the brake booster) and check the condition of the B+ cable. Look at the end in the fuse box. It is at the front RH (LH when viewed from the front of the car). It has a nut and all of it should be shiny and bright. This is an issue often overlooked on these cars that Volvo never fixed. The one on mine had melted below the fuse box connection and was not long away from shorting out.
