It sounds like a problem with the clutch. I would start at the compressor with a voltmeter and see if the voltage remains after the compressor quits. If it has good voltage at the clutch but the clutch doesn't stay engaged then it is a clutch problem. If the voltage drops out then the compressor is being told to turn off and that would usually be either a bad low pressure switch or a bad high pressure switch. Those would be the next things to go after with the voltmeter.
