Heatercore hose is the wrong hose to use. You want OIL RATED hose.

I just reread your post, yes I see that hose on ebay that you suggest, thanks.
Are the rest Volvo hoses that you use, or do you substitute for them also?

The other issue that we have is that we don't have a spare car for him to take
in case something goes wrong and I need a few days to figure it out. I suppose
that I should be more optimistic.

I've been reading, should I drill out the PTC valve?

I have been meaning to try drilling out the PTC element hole as well, haven't got around to it. Curious as to whether just drilling out the hole as a first step will help with relieving crankcase pressure. Has anyone tried doing that, only, and what was the result?

We have cracked vacuum lines and I should probably replace them all.
Is there a good quality hose that I can just order 20 ft or so of?

I see that most of the parts are on sale at FCP now, so I should just order them
and replace the oil trap. I have to get the VIN on the car. Not sure why FCP
says that there are several oil trap boxes that will fit - which OEM one is best?

Has anyone cut one open to see what's inside if anything, are there any baffles?

There are two slightly different geometries on the oil trap box hose connections. You have to match up the right trap with the right little hose on the side, to be able to put it together. Otherwise, they are functionally equivalent.

Thanks Erik that makes sense.

If I had remembered that the PCV issue is mainly sludge (ours is also cracked hoses)
then I would have used Mobile 1 synthetic. I do believe the claims that Mobile 1
produces far less sludge and holds up better than dino oil. I think that we'll switch
on the next oil change.

Even an affordable synthetic blend such as Helix 10W-40 will be kinder to the PCV system than dino oil.

Using full synthetic gives no guarantees that it won't sludge up eventually; it just prolongs the inevitable at a higher mileage count :D
