I would look at the TransGo kit for clues as to your issues. It sounds like you may have some leaking in the valve body causing pressure to not build up. So when you force the shift via Geartronic - you are working around the issue.

I don't see why not either. Although on a VW, with a ZF transmission, I had a similar issue and it was an internal part that was broken. If you didn't see any metal sparkle when you did your drain and fill then you most likely have a worn bore. The TransGo kit has some updates/fixes for this - that is why I recommend you looking at their write up for clues. A guy on YouTube does some tear downs on this transmission and mentions various items. May be worth watching.

The valve body job is not very difficult to do.

well my linkage had also fallen apart and the dealer wanted $500+ to replace the linkage. I was able to get the kit for $10 and spent about 2 hours getting it fully installed and now it's as tight as can be and it's a joy to drive in this mode. Well worth it.

Got it. thanks. My fluid was not that dirty and I didn't see much if any silver particles. I think for me as i enter a busy travel time for work I don't have the time to crawl under but I will eventually do the VB kit and post back my results. As of now, drives great in geartronic mode.

topic not solved but interestingly the volvo is starting to learn the adaptive mode that I did a couple of months ago. less flaring now. Hmm, good I guess but interesting still.
