Big Oil Leak front of 2.5T - Two cam seals and front crank seal - Any other seals ?

The XC90 runs like a champ. I bought it as a first car for my tall son and planning to keep it until either engine or transmission goes out. Matter of fact, I am planning to get the S80 for my other son as these are the safest cars on the road! The most valuable tool I got my hands on was the VIDA. So far the XC90 has no codes for VVT.

2. Second link is a thread and "jordank" and I discussed the engineering aspect of the VVT. NOTE:

a. The cam seal is the seal preventing oil from leaking to the outside world.

b. The VVT O-ring is there to keep oil pressurized for advance/retard functioning. So if the O-ring is bad, the VVT cannot activate the solenoid.

Also note that with mileage, the gear mesh inside the VVT gets loose, thus the play which you cannot fix.

I personally think at 150K-160K, best is to get band-new Volvo VVT x2. I understand it will cost $250 x2 = $500, but this is minimal considering that these 2 VVT hubs should last another 150K.

Also new hubs prevent timing belt from "walking".
Maybe it will prevent TB disaster (TB walking cause ? derailing ---> new engine).

Yes, I found the same videos. Thanks you.

I did the glove test and seems like PCV is not problem. I am getting good suction with the glove. See the picture below.

I did notice that the timing belt was not riding in the center of the gear. It was toward the right edge. Not sure if this indicates anything. See picture below. It's kind of hard to tell if there any play in it with the belt on. I will remove the accessory belt and timing belt and report back.

The can occur in either intake or exhaust VVT gear. Correct?

Hi,

I did put a timing belt kit in two years ago and I noticed it was odd that the timing belt on the exhaust side was off like what you see in the picture. I will take out all of the belts and see if there is any play in the VVT gear. Its probably bad.

Is is the exhaust side VVT gear more susceptible in going bad? What about the Inake VVT ?

Where is a good place to buy new VVT gear? FCP Euro sells them for $183.

Is the intake and exhaust uses same VVT gear ?

Funny I post this...

My 2005 XC90 2.5T has a very very minor oil stain right behind the WP area: a classic place for Cam Seals to leak (learned from my 1998 S70 and 1998 V70).
Basically a drop here and there. Nothing on the garage floor.
So I have a basic rule: if there is no oil on garage floor, I live with the minor leak bc changing these cam seals is no fun.

See the link below on a 2004 XC90. NOTE:
1. Intake and Exhaust VVT are different.
2. The location of the leak, if you look behind the WP area, if you see oil stain there, chances are it comes from cam seals.

I last did the TB, WP around 105K miles.
The cam seals are the last thing I want to do on a 2.5T simply bc I have to lock the rear of the camshafts, so this job can wait another year or two...

I just got my CTA Tools 2864 Cam Locking Tool for Volvo for $100 from Amazon. I am going to dig in to it this coming weekend and will see how worn the cam gear is.

Can anyone please let me know where is a good place to purchase the cam gear ?

Dealer websites.
Check ebay, sometimes dealers sells genuine items on ebay.
For this job, you need to spend some $250 for each VVT hub.
No point running around to save $, unless you find a good deal elsewhere.

The cam seals do leak and need to be replaced often on the 2.5. The crank seals almost never leak on these. The reason for the leak is most likely a clogged oil trap (PCV). Make sure you check the charge air hose. It gets saturated with oil as well it’s a quick fix to replace and will leave you stranded if it bursts from oil saturation. Replace the timing belt and pulleys. With the engine running pull the dip stick or the oil filler cap. If there is much resistance from vacuum then you have a bad oil trap replace it or you’ll be doing the cam seals again.
