As to AWD helping with 0 - 60 times, I think you loose a bit of HP going through the additional mechanics before the power gets to the wheels. I can certainly tell you that applies to 4x4's so I would think it would here as well.
I've been considering taking the AWD shaft off for a while now. Will try it soon. But still the XC is rated at 7.7 sec.

What do you mean by the first part? I thought AWD helps 0-60 times since it gives more traction.
It’s a fat puppy compared to a FWD :D

Love it dude! 👍 My aim is for really fun. Right now though I believe factory power is 190hp, probably less than that. It's still fun. My friend was in the backseat when I floored it. It really feels fast. It places V6 cars in my rear view mirror. I still want to know why I'm getting 9sec runs instead of the reported 7.3-7.8? And how to solve the issue

The 98 V70 XC we had was a pretty quick car. But compared to the V70 T5 I had in europe it was a real slug. It was quicker off the mark, but once the T5 turbo spooled up it would blow the XC into the weeds. The XC has 193hp v's the T5 Euro spec had 250hp. Add to the difference is the AWD system adds a lot of fat to the AWD car.

I liked my V70 XC when it wasn't broken (so not that much as it was in a constant state of repair like my 'R' but way cheaper). Was still sad to see it go but someone else needed it more than me.

Rick has stated some very good points in that we all take the fact a car isn't broken means it is working at its optimum. Reality says a 20+ year old car with 150-200k on it is going to be far from that and O2 sensors and injectors wear out slowly so we don't tend to notice.

Good luck in finding the missing horse!

Neil.

I removed the drive shaft from my '99 XC recently due to having a bad center support bearing. The power to the front wheels is impressive - maintaining traction does become an issue however.

The faster you try to hurry, the quicker you get to end of life,..just sayin...

Thank y'all for the advice. I've been considering removing driveshaft for quite some time. Im looking at replacing injectors, O2 sensors, brakes. And I think getting an alignment will help a bit. Accelerating and turning makes my car shake a bit. I already know the alignment is off.

At 250hp or less, FWD vs. AWD for traction makes very little difference. Up to that point any normal passenger car's acceleration is entirely weight/power bound.

And gearing and tire size/type, but for the sake of this thread we're not considering those variables, because we're simply talking about P80s.

At 300hp or thereabouts, the front wheel spin will start affecting 0-60 and 1/4 mile times in a clear, objective manner you can see on paper, if not hear and feel during the first 20 feet ;-). But not 1/4 trap times speed, which tend to be a function of purely weight/power.

You can get within a few % accuracy any car's actual WHP by using a formula and plugging in its weight and 1/4 mile trap.

Anyway, here's this https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/stage-0.html for the must-do basics, and this Tune my ride 98 v70 lpt for some LPT power tips.

Reason: fixed trap time -> speed, duh
