A while back, before I bought my green 854, I looked at a maroon turbo wagon that the kid had said the heater core blew up on him.
We bypassed it and the car started fine, but coolant would shoot 2' out of the reservoir when you revved the motor. (Ran "fine" otherwise).
Pretty extreme cooling system pressurization from a bad HG (and most likely now a cracked block).
Needless to say we didn't buy that car...
Your car was over-heated before you bought it. If the fan wasn't working, at all, then it had been overheated. Most likely more than once.
