A while back, before I bought my green 854, I looked at a maroon turbo wagon that the kid had said the heater core blew up on him.

Pretty extreme cooling system pressurization from a bad HG (and most likely now a cracked block).

Needless to say we didn't buy that car...

Your car was over-heated before you bought it. If the fan wasn't working, at all, then it had been overheated. Most likely more than once.

From what I have read over the years, Beck Arnley basically buys whatever they can lay their hands on and puts it in a Beck Arnley box. The actual part could be from anywhere and made by anyone. Might be great. Might be bad.
