Found thread through search.... :D

I briefly saw my oil filter when poking around my "new" S70 and thought it looked weird. Imagine my surprise when I'm looking at parts online and find cartridge style filters listed. I've got multiple spin on filter on my parts shelf, but it looks like I'll have to buy a different part number than what my 850 uses.

up to 98 (and maybe a few early 99) cars had the metal spin on filter. This was used from the 60's on by Volvo. Same filter as I recall!

For some reason they decided to go to the paper filter element in MY99 for some reason. Don't see the point but perhaps cost I suppose.

Added Volvo part numbers to thread.

The insert type never rusts out, as the housing is plastic. I’ve had two can types rust out from the top, one of them to failure. Stay religious to the 12 month interval with the can type.

Evita, Shagg 1999 NA are can type

Elizabeth, Kat , and Catherine (99,99,05) are insert type

I did check the top of the spin on filter, on my 850, when I changed the oil. It was several weeks ago, so I don't recall exactly what I saw, but I do remember it was nothing major.... slight rust or discoloration? I think it's from the straight up and down position with the filter can being larger diameter than the seal. It just holds water and starts to corrode. My other vehicles either have a filter with an angled position, or have a larger diameter seal or both.

The new filter I put on the 850 is a smaller diameter synthetic filter, and the can is just large enough to contain the seal, so it does not have the capacity to hold much, if any, water.

I'm surprised to see the cartridge style filter on a vehicle as old as a 99. I thought bringing that type of filter back was a much newer trend. I've never had to change one before.... never had a Chevy old enough. I did have the outboard container for an oil filter, for an old Chevy, from when filters weren't necessarily standard. It was a local auction purchase, but I never did anything with it, so I sold it on ebay for a good amount.
