Axle shaft stuck in transmission housing

It is on the outer edge of the transmission where the axle enters the side of it. It is about 2" or so in diameter, black or brown. It is what holds the oil in the trans and the axle goes through it.

I believe my car needs a new one of those! I re-inspected the axle opening and realized there was a seal there, but it was not evenly seated - part of it was almost sticking out! I did not want to try to take it out for fear that it would fall apart, but I did just manage to get it more evenly seated. Need to re-assemble everything and inspect the area where the axle goes into the trans., see if there is any leakage.
Any idea what this part/seal is identified as? Outer transmission seal? Outer axle seal? I will probably have to order this seal, and I want to be an informed buyer!!!:))

Ah yes. A ‘sealing ring’ on one side, a ‘drive shaft seal’ on the other

These will not solve they axle coming out problem, though
