This was my basic thread on the fixing of the dash on my car. One day I will get the time to write up the whole story with the pictures I took but this may help a little:

Some additional pictures from the repairs:

It took a while to make the brackets and to make sure they did not foul the mounting bolt holes. The plastic welder (bought from a company here called Princess Auto but maybe Harbor Freight or Eastwood may carry them?). was a really helpful tool. My repairs were not pretty but they were strong.

Pretty doesn't matter if you never see or hear it! :)
When you say you checked all of the servos and A/C and heating components, did you just remove the dash cowl and cycle through all of the climate control settings? Did you find anything interesting? I will end up removing the dash in my 850 and I'd like to 'freshen up' the system. I plan on replacing the heater core and fixing whatever is causing my CCU to blink at me, as well as lubricating and cleaning anything I can get to.

Awesome writeups by the way, not just this one you have referenced! Thanks for always providing great documentation of your work.

You are welcome. No in this case I didn't find anything problematic with the system for once. Much of the lost air to the windshield was going through the holes in the breaks in the air pipes caused by the broken mounts. Also previous to this I found the common fault of a broken plastic arm for the intake air flap behind the fan motor.

Will let you know how it turns out. It is a roll of 1/8"thick by 3/8" wide butyl tape.

What are you using the butyl tape for? Reading the info it does not look like it has mechanical strength properties. If you are hoping to repair broken mounts, I would not have thought this product would work. Look at something like JB weld plastic glue which also bonds to metal and ABS.

Below are 2 x Harbor Freight welders and different price points and although from a Canadian supplier, the last one is the one I have which is great as no cords.

What every you do I wish you luck!

Neil-

The butyl tape will be for a temporary fix to the fiance's s70 dash, a fix like the one described in the original post for the thread. She tells me that by shoving her wallet up onto the dash between the upper dash and windshield she can pretty much make the dash creaking stop. Because of that I expect for the 6ish months that we plan to keep the car, the 'ghetto' fix will work well.

Your more thorough fix that you described and linked I will be using on my platinum edition which I plan to keep as a forever car- so I will do the permanent fix and do it right :)
