That is a mistake I made, but at the time I thought it was a good move as I had found ATE have no replacement parts for it nor had Volvo to re-build it. My view was that I would have to go down the 'option' route to try to future proof the car. I am still thinking of pulling parts from a car at PnP even as cores for the future and add to the 'stash' in case they too become hard to find.

Although it is a pain, there must be companies out there that can re-build rare calipers or modify them to work with parts still available. In the UK there was a company called BIG RED (I think) who does that so surely there must be someone other than the Cardone's out there that can do this in NA?

If you are ever in need of emissions stuff that is mounted above the fuel tank, much is obsolete. PM me as I have a stash of parts I may give up some of. I went through a stage of pulling rear sub-frames from the AWD P80's and taking obsoleted parts I had found out about when re-building the rear sub-frame on my 'R'.

Will do thanks Neil!

So with obselete parts is that happening with 850s as well or is this more of an issue where you had Volvo changing part designs every year from 98-2000 so there just isnt the parts market to make it worth manufacturers time?

It was a couple years ago but I never had this happen with the 850 and I swapped a lot of parts out on that car.

850's had a more stable production, although there are even differences there but maybe not as big, and AWD 850's were not sold in the US in their only year of 1997. We got them here in Canada. They are at least interchangable with 98 AWD V/S70's.

The 'R' models have a lt of different stuff each year it was made. Also evap systems became more complex. Those systems were unique to North America too. So there are challenges. However guys on the various Volvo sites have found ways around some of the issues like modified Porsche brakes. So it is worth looking into stuff like this.

I was surprised at the low production numbers on the R and T5 models. Only 100 ish of my T5 manual imported to North America in 1999 for example.

When I was looking for calipers, I found only 2, one for each side as rebuilt units. Trying to recall the brand name. I think it was something like NuGeon. But it is worth checking with the usual suspects like Napa and Cardone. I even tried to get a re-build kit from ATE but they no longer made them.

For the 2000 year, Volvo had an option to replace the rear brakes with parts form a P2. I will try to find the thread with the info on it and add a link.

Here it is:

2nd page has the part numbers, but you may need to check with the dealer. If you have difficulties with them, let me know and I will see if I can get help from my local dealer where I worked for a short time and the parts guys are good.

Found an ATE rebuilt unit, a no pic Amazon post. Specifically states “R AWD,” gonna call the company tomorrow and see if they really have them.

Caliper was fine, issue the whole time from what I can tell is that I’m missing a pad retaining clip. European eBay has them so I’m guessing I’ll order from there.

Good deal :)
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Weeks later and I just got the brake pad retaining spring from UK EBay like two days ago. 98-00 brake parts for the rear of AWD S/V70s are just stupid hard to find.

It was definitely the problem and it’s totally fixed now. Pretty big impact for a small and rare piece of
bent metal rod
