I've not done any shift sequence. Simply ran 12 quarts of Mobile 3309 thru my tranny, and had the dealer update the software. So far , so good.

Got about 300 km. on the car since thr drain and fill.My wife tells me it slips into neutral when it warms up and she takes her foot off the gas. I plan on doing another D&F this weekend....I had the trans. software update done about 6 months ago,do I need to have it done again possibly?

If it is really going to neutral after having the software correction, it sounds like I'd verify 1st then head back to the dealer for them to take a test ride.

Thanks for the detailed and completely awesome post. Just did the drain and fill on my 2002 V70 XC that I recently purchased with...173K, body great shape, interior in amazing cond., engine/exhaust/suspension all obviously well taken care of and in great shape (have had a few other Volvos, see a good one and you'll have it for - well - ever). Wow! Instant difference and judging by the color of the ___ that came out, was probably the original fluid.

One thing I would recommend is Lucas Transmission Fix if you have an older tranny. This stuff is thick like cold honey, so keep it room temp until your ready to pour it. Here's a trick to get it down the funnel a little easier - pour some ATF (whatever 3309 you choose to use) so that it fills the cup a little bit, now start pouring the Lucas into the middle of the cup. You'll see (as long as your funnel/tube is clear), that the ATF acts like a conduit since Lucas is thicker/heavier, so you'll see it dropping down the chute.

On a personal note - sorry to see that you got rid of your V70. Please get another Volvo to work on as a project so we can look forward to more great posts like this one!

With just over 70K miles on my wifes 2005 V70, I was going to have my local Toyota Dealer do the transmission fluid change. This dealer has outsanding service and has done great work on my 2 Toyota's. But I was curious about the cost versus the Volvo dealer's cost. So I just made a call to our Knoxville Volvo Service Dept. I asked what they wanted for a transmission fluid change.

The service rep nearly knocked me off of my chair. She said that Volvo does NOT recommend a transmission fluid change!!! Trying to not be argumentative, I asked even if you have a vehicle with say +150K miles also? Yep. She said Volvo has a "sealed" system and any dirt particles introduced would be destructive and therefore they do not recommend that service ever. She confirmed that this dealer does not do this service at all.

Wow, what do ya'll think about that .... !!!

Thanks in advance,

I bought my 2002 V70 T5 a year ago with 120k. The ATF was dark but still red. The trans occasionally shifted hard from rev to drive and occasionally had harsh downshifts into first. I immediately did the drain and refill process 3 times and changed the B4 servo cap. The trans got much better. Subsequently I have been doing a 3.5 qt. drain and refill with every engine oil change (5k intervals). I am now pushing 150k and the trans seems to be holding steady without any further deterioration.

I do notice that the trans is absolutely perfect till the car warms up. I'm wondering if a large auxiliary trans cooler would help. Anyone have any experience with that?

My fingers are crossed that this will be a 250k + trans on this maintenance schedule. The rest of the car is in great shape but I won't throw $4k to $5k at it for a trans. Plus I just put new tires on it and want to get my full service life out of them.

I'm curious why I"m only getting 2.3qt out of mine every time I empty the pan? I'm also up on ramps and you got almost twice what I'm getting!

With a 12L system I'm going to want to this about 5 times! I'm writing this while I"m waiting for my 3rd drain. I may do the last two tomorrow after some longer driving.

There's a llink here on how to perform a modified flush on your trans. I did this on my 05 S60 and couldn't believe just how dirty the fluid actually was. Now, I wasn't having any problems with my trans, and I have 101K on the car now. I simply did the flush in an attempt to make it last as long as I possibly can. I to was informed by my Volvo dealer in Lexington, KY they don't do the trans service, but if I were a betting man would almost wadger they would love to put a new trans in my car. I don't know about you, or others here, but I think my local dealer is absolutely horrible.
