Another project .

The car has unending thick plume of smoke. Enough to cover the neighborhood so have to shut it off very quickly. Thing was 5 quarts low on oil when I got it. After filling it started twice for less than 30 seconds and there is a large leak on the cardboard. Can't do much as it's in a senior community. The garage is getting lights install then insulation in the walls and attic. Will be awhile so I may have it towed to friend's home more rural with room to work. No water on dipstick, no oil in coolant. 153K miles.

Where do I start besides the quick cleaning and Tech Choice sealant. As for the interior, needs deep cleaning and clothe on door panels replaced.

That black smoke sounds like the fuel mixture is fairly rich e.g a lot of fuel that goes unburned. My 2c at least.

This could be caused by a bad maf sensor and/or bad o2 sensor telling it's getting more air but it isn't.

Hi dikidera, I apologize but I didn't note it was a plume of thick pure white smoke. Smells like burned oil. Thanks.

white smoke I'd expect coolant , blue smoke is oil.
coolant can reach the exhaust if the seals fail in the turbo, blown turbo will also blow blue smoke.
I would inspect the turbo from under the car, ramps or jackstands and a strong light, losing that much oil should be easy to track down.

It definitely white smoke but smells like oil. So thick you lose visibility down the street. Will give it a look thanks!

Oil in the turbo and lots of play in the turbine shaft. Both the turbo and inter-cooler pipes had lots of fresh oil inside and drained out.

Its not so bad, drain the coolant,

OIl soak the heat shield bolts before starting , work the bolts back and forth gently allowing ther penetrant to soak into the threads, thses bolts will snap off very easily if you just force the issue.

disconnect all the banjo bolts from the turbo ( from top and bottom).
The turbo is full of coolant and will come out as the banjos are loosened...all over you.

Before separating the turbo halves make witness marks on the 2 halves of the turbo so it goes back in proper alignment, not magic marker, use a dremel or something to make a scratch mark.

Remove band clamp and pull the front alum half of the turbo out the top.
oil drain pipe will come with the turbo, twist and turn as needed to pull it clear.

Remove the big circlip and extract the turbo cartridge in one piece, replace with new balanced cartridge from ebay.
No need to remove the cast iron section of the turbo.
You'll need the numbers from the turbo to make sure you get the correct part. $190 last time I looked.
Order new copper washers for banjo bolts, 2 per bolt.
Replace rubber O ring seal on the bottom of the oil drain tube.
Have some lower the turbo into place as you reach up and guide it down to the oil drain hole .

That is bad news. Not horrible but more work than you hoped I'm sure.

White smoke can also be caused by brake fluid. Can the coolant in the turbo actually get into the turbo itself?
