'94 Volvo 940 starting issue - barely cranks over

Post by Mn10 »

Hi everyone,

Yesterday my Volvo randomly developed a starting issue. When you go to start the car, it cranks like usual but on the second crank it fails to turn over unless I accelerate a little. (The first time this happened , it barely turned over and then the RPMs started to drop until the check engine light came on and I accelerated. After that though the check engine light went away)

After the car starts, it runs and idles perfectly fine. I haven't had the chance to properly diagnose it yet, but I do know the following:

I don't hear the fuel pump prime when I turn on the ignition
So far it has only happened with a warm engine, a cold start has been fine.

I was thinking that it could be the fuel pump or the fuel relay, but surely if those were faulty, the car would have problems during normal driving as well....right?

I've tried to google it, but, it seems that nobody has had the same issue that I've had. If this question has already been answered, then please do link me. Similarly, I'm open to suggestions as well, so feel free to share :D

Thank you :)

Edit: Started it this morning and it started up fine. So it could be a warm engine start issue, I'll test it after driving it later.

Ok well upon further investigation it turned out that this issue was caused by a mistake on my part. A week or so ago I took my battery out to charge it and forgot to tighten the smaller nut on the positive terminal cable which resulted in the starter cable not making proper contact with the actual end of the positive cable. After I tightened that cable, no troubles at all. Car starts up perfectly each time. .

Loose cables and wires cause a lot of our troubles.
Keep that old timer running.
