Unknown open hose and elbow

Post by 823 »

Hello,
So, I bought an 850 T5 last year with a lot of previous owners, and apparently some shady ones, it broke down the day I bought it, repaired it, it's been running since February (without tracs and abs because apparently it's malfunctioning).
Anyways, while trying to fix the abs with a friend, we found out that there was a hose attached to... nothing, and an elbow too.
I'm pretty lost, it's my first car and that stuff is concerning, I'd just like to know if someone can help me, photos attached.
Thanks a lot.

I believe that's all part of your PCV system. Not sure as your car is a euro version, but I think the small elbow goes down to the PTC valve just before the turbo. The other larger pipe I don't recognize ( I have a modified system ), but I think it connects the air box.
Someone might have disconnected it, so as to allow excess pressure to escape.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

+1 with Sveedy on this. I have no idea what the brass pipe is. Perhaps someone was having issues with PCV pressure and used it as a vent to atmosphere? There is oil residue around there. I would suggest trying to cap it somehow, and then doing the old glove test on the oil filler cap before and after capping the connector and check for differences in how the glove behaves.

The elbow as suggested may fit to a small nipple/pipe at the bottom of the air pipe into the turbo on the upper side beside the PTC unit. I seem to recall some of the older P80's used a nipple higher up on the intake pipe to the turbo near the top connection to the airbox on the lower side of the pipe.

Try following the pipe to see where the other end goes to. There are a couple of other possibilities. One is under the air box on the side closest to the engine, but that may only be on non-turbo/NA engines, also check all the connections are on the TCV. However, as you have 3 3 colored silicon hoses I would suspect those are the pipes to the TCV.

Neil.

Thanks for the insight, I forgot to say there was a capped off hose linked to the brass pipe, one meter / ~3 ft long, but there was no clamp, or it broke while I was working on it. I'll look at the elbow tomorrow.

In the 3rd photo, the arrow on the right points to the heater hose which is missing the rubber part. It looks like someone has bypassed the heater core - the open pipe at the other arrow is roughly there the other heater hose went.
The hose in photo 3, as others have suggested, probably goes to the air intake pipe.

To add -
The top hose from the firewall should go to a fitting on the back side (drivers side) of the cylinder head. The lower pipe/hose goes from the firewall to the open pipe in the photo. To verify, see if it joins a larger pipe and goes to the rear of the water pump. This is the wp inlet.
It’s hard to tell because of the blue turbo charger line, but it looks like the other heater hose is missing the rubber part as well
