Stuck Rear seat seatbelts on 2007 XC70. Fixable?

Post by AylmerQc »

I had a go at trying to fix a rear seatbelt that won't pull out at times. I didn't have much success, stopping when I saw it was getting quite involved.
What's the way to deal with these rear belts?

Are the little button shaped plastic stops missing from the rear seat belts? These little plastic stops keep the belt from retracting too far and locking in the spool mechanism. See the Volvo parts catalog picture below. The buttons are numbers 2, 3, 8, and 9. I have had problems getting the seat belts to pull out when these buttons are missing and the seat has been folded flat. The upper buttons are the important ones to keep the seat belt from retracting too far into the spool. The lower ones keep the seat belt buckle from getting lost under the cushion when putting the seat back up from the folded position. I had to remove the seat belt bolt (item #5) to slacken the belt and get it to pull out again when the mechanism was locked. Sewing or gluing buttons to the correct locations fixed the problem for me. there should be some faint witness marks for where the buttons were located. These buttons can be removed from junkyard vehicles with a knife or screwdriver prying underneath the plastic. Then you need to re-open the push through hole in the seat belt using an awl. Push the replacement into the hole and secure it with a good coating of superglue coated on the plastic parts and soaked into the belt fabric.

Thanks.
The little plastic stop is there.
What I tried after writing this post is banging on the back of the seat and 9 times out of ten this worked in allowing the belt to be pulled out.
I imagine however the retractor is built, it's gummed up a bit. Ideally it probably needs a bit of WD 40 or similar lub, I'm guessing...

I've had this happen, try retracting the seatbelt with the seatback in a position other than upright. It should eventually retract if you move the seatback up and down while pulling on the seatbelt.

The plastic covers come off the top of the back seat but it is very easy to crack and damage these covers. Once the end covers have been removed, you will be able to see the seat belt spools and blow them clean with compressed air. I tried to find instructions and pictures in Vida/Dice and found nothing.
