Fan Runs Continously 04 V70

Post by otis44 »

I have a 2004 V70 N/A with 81,000 miles. My problem or question is; sometimes after the car is shut down it appears the cooling fan or what I assume is the cooling fan will run on indefinitely until the car is restarted. At other times it appears the fan will come on out of the blue as happened yesterday. The wife went in to shop, did not notice the fan on when she got out of the car, an hour or so later returned and it was running. This happens once a week or so. Also air is blowing from the dash vents at the same time.

The temp. gauge on the car reads normal, the thermostat was replaced with the timing belt/water pump service six months or so ago, and the car has no check/warning lights present.

Is there a fan relay that is possibly bad or is this related to the ECT sensor, or something else. Water or rain does not appear to affect whether this happens or not. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks

Otis I tried looking for a post on this within the forums to see if I can get a better explanation for you but couldn't locate one. It is normal for my S60 to do this after the car is shut down. It usually occurs when the weather is getting hotter. I believe it is to cool down the interior of the car and/or to keep moisture from building up in the system. Mine will stay on sometimes approximately 45 min to 1 hr, if yours never shuts it self off then you may indeed have a problem. It does sound normal to me though. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members will correct me if I'm wrong.

I found this on the Swedespeed forums:

45 mins is a bit long but they do run after your car is shut off- clears out the moisture in the A/C system- main cause of earlier evaporator failures.

Thanks for the replies. As I stated this only happens (we think) somewhat intermittently. I will have my wife pay closer atention to such things as the ambient temperature, the car temp. gauge, and whether or not the fan is running when the car is shut-off. It could be just a normal cooling process or function, I don't know. Thanks again and I will post back if there is a resolution or if I have any further questions.

Otis just to be clear, on my S60 it doesn't always happen it is as you said "somewhat intermittently". It also doesn't always happen when I just get out of the car. At time's I have been out of the car for an hour and I go into my garage and the fan will have come on and be running. It sounds to me that what you are experiencing is normal.

True- the owners manual warns about putting your hands near the fan because it could start up unexpectedly.

I caught the car in the act, so to speak this afternoon when the wife came home from work. It is not the cooling fan, I raised the hood to check, it is the blower motor. It must be as Made In Japan said and confirmed on another post I found over on brickboard. The blower motor is running to clear out any moisture in the evaporator.

We bought the car over the winter and had never experienced this until the weather warmed up and she began using the AC. Thanks again for the replies and the help.

**On a side note, Made In Japan, I noticed you are in Knoxville. Are there any junkyards in that area with any S90 or 960 parts. I'm looking for a r.h. rear door for a 98 model S90 to be exact.

There are a couple of junk yards- both are "pick your own" style places....one off of Clinton Hwy right at the Anderson County line- the other is off of Rutledge pike over in the eastern section of Knox County- it's a chain place where you pay to get in (a buck I believe) and take your own tools and every week they smash cars into pancakes. I can look them up if you want- they should have their inventories listed on their websites. I'm not sure if they have what you are looking for right now.
