Volvo Repair Database Oil leak

Post by tom39 »

98 S70 T5

The oil leak has been around for some time now but has all of the sudden decided to get worse. At first it was just a thin film on the bell housing (BH) next it moved in size to a few drips on the drive. But in the last 2 weeks it has grown more than can be ignored.
First glance, I thought it was the RMS but the more I investigate it appears to be leaking from the oil pan. I say this because the oil is not coming from the weep hole at the bottom of the BH but from the seam at which the BH connects to the pan. In addition to that, the flex plate as seen in pic is not oil soaked as it would be if coming from RMS. To be more specific, rear-left-upper corner of the oil pan, right above trans drain bolt. See attached pics, notice oil droplet at oil pan/BH seam.
The question is: How involved is the removal of the oil pan? From what I see, it looks like I would have to remove -
1. Pan Bolts
2. Oil cooler lines
3. Power steering lines

, and the pan should come out. Or is there more to it, that I am not seeing?

Thanks
TOM G

You are right about removing the pan. I think there was a thread or a write up about that but I can't remember. I remember the person saying they bent the power steering lines out of the way. I've always wondered what that would look like. If you do decide to remove the pan would you be able to take some pictures and make a write up? That would be really appreciated.

polskamafia mjl, will do on pics.
So, do you believe my assumption is right that the leak is is the oil pan or is joe saying what I don't want to hear and I am trying to find another reasons other than RMS?

Check the cam seals,it will run down the back of the motor and looks like a rear main leaking.

Does anyone know if the oil pan is sealed by a gasket or with a sealant. Can't find a gasket on IPD or FCP Groton for the pan just some oil passage o-rings and gasket sealant.

Thanks

+1 on what cattledog said. Get the OEM Volvo pink stuff, the Kiril K2 sealer doesn't work worth beans.

Don't use RTV, it will squish out and clog the oil pump intake strainer.

I have been workind on the td1 5 cylinder version and have just replaced both the main oil seals. ther is no gasket seal on the sump pan it is sealant as said by our other friends.
Your problem will be to replace the seals you will have to dump the gearbox /clutch and flywheel to get access then if you are lucky it will be a press in seal around the main rear crank uk £8. My TDi took me a week to find the right seal and it is bonded in to a plate and was only available from VOLVO (groan) UK £140! for goodness sake.
Good luck but be prepared for a big rebuild. on the positive side at lease the seal is behind the fly wheel and your clutch should be ok from contamination.

I think he's only resealing the pan in which case he won't have to remove the trans.
