camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor question

hi,

even since i got the check engine light my 2002 Volvo s60 2.4T AWD i've noticed a pretty significant increase in fuel consumption.

the check engine light turned out to be a P0014(camshaft sensor) and P0016(crankshaft sensor).

what exactly do the camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor do?
also, how hard is it to get to them and replace?

They monitor crankshaft and camshaft rpm and location by use of hall effect sensor, positioned closely to a tone ring.
They are easy to change. It's rare that they both went at the same time. If so check wiring and fuses first.

some weeks ago i had alternator problems and when the battery was drained the indicators were all going crazy, i suppose all electrical things.

after i changed the alternator i got these codes.
how will these sensors affect the car? i don't see any change apart from the fuel consumption that seems higher.

I'd check all your alternator connections, especially the ground. Then clear the codes and see what you have.

clear the codes first, and see which one if any returns.
