Suspension pop

Post by IVIUSTANG »

Hey guys,

The symptoms are: pop or two pops that can be heard within the car better than outside when at low speed driving or reversing while turning left; it also sometimes does it when I turn right immediatly after turning left. The only ball joints left on this car that are original are my control arms and inner tie rods.

I am chasing a mystery front end pop from my car. I have changed all my tie rod ends and endlinks as well as checked my control arms for any play. I did notice that my bushings on my sway bar are shot. I also had another mechanic friend look at the car and he thought the suspension was very tight and couldn't give me a diagnosis. Two mechanics and one mechanicly inclined person(myself) can't get any abnormal movement out of the tire.

At this point should I order inner tie rods or what do you all think, take the cheaper route first?

I am having the exact same symptom and assumed it must be an outer tie rod or sway bar end link. Though, like you there isn't anything that's obviously loose (yet). The inner tie rod had not occured to me. Mine is quite loud inside the car and comes from the front passenger side. If I figure mine out first, I'll let you know......

Sway bar links. they make a noise that seems to come from somewhere else.
I changed them and bad noises went away.
Just sayin'.

I changed my endlinks and tie rod ends so it can't be those as the sound is identical to before the installation of those parts.

Mine is doing the exact same thing. I replaced the strut mounts and spring seats - Noise didn't go away. I let me know if the inner tie rods fix it.

Isn't it the limiter (or whatever it is called there) that touches when you go to the left or right extremes?
Mine used to do that, I applied some grease on them, no more pops heard since then ...

It isn't in this case, it only takes a slight turn to get the pop. I also greased the stops as well, and fixed my strut from rubbing my brake lines on corners.

What is the "limiter"? Got a picture of it? I'm ready with the grease - just need to know where to apply it :-) Mine seems to pop at a more severe turn but maybe not all the way to the "limit" as it were.

On the front of the axles are a plastic tab. That's what you want to grease.

My Saab always made a similar noise on sharp turns, but I never did bother to find out what it was. I think you guys are right on the right track the inner tie rods, though.

Justin, can you point out the location of "front" and "plastic tab" in this picture?

Thanks!
