Volvo Repair Database 2002 S60 2.4T transmission disengages while driving

Post by ac102nv »

I tried to search, but no joy. Maybe I missed something...

Anyway, my wife drives a '02 S60 2.4T with 110k miles that just developed an issue. Scheduled maint is up to date including trans fluid, TB, etc, etc. No warning messages at all. Issue is while driving down the road just maintaining speed it seems to fall out of gear, or go into neutral. This is not a shift flair as the only way to regain drive is come to a complete stop. While coasting to a stop there's a tinny rotating sound that seems to be based on wheel speed. Doesn't matter if I shift to neutral or leave in D. Also, it does it above 40mph with gear select in 3,4, or D. Doesn't seem to be internal to trans but any advice would be appreciated. Oh yes, trans fluid was changed at 50k (even though I had to force dealer to do it), again at 107k, and the neutral stop function had been removed when we purchased at 45k. Sorry I don't have too many more details as the last 4 miles drive I went on this happen 5 times.

Thanks for your help!

Hmmmmm....

Not sure at all. Could be electrical in the Transmission Control Unit or could be a mechanical problem inside the transmission, itself.

The 2001 and 2002 S60's are apparently notorious for a ticking-time-bomb transmission.

Valve body or worn solenoid bore? If you have VIDA DiCE, there is a functional TCM test that verfies quite a few things. Also, there may be TCM-related codes stored even without MIL, that can tell the rest of the story.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Sadly no VIDA DiCE, but will try my plain old obd II scanner to see if it's of any help. Thank you!

obd II scanner report NO issues, figures. Question for your guys then...If was to have the trans replaced (assuming that's the issue) would the replacement be any better than the original or did I just reset the time bomb?

"Talk" to the car with a proprietory Volvo scanner first, as there may be information that remains obscure to most generic tools; and you still have an option to resolve at a lesser cost. The 'stealership wizzards' should assess your case for $90 bucks or so. :)

Quick update...spoke with Volvo service and made appt for tomorrow to get it looked at. Based on symptoms I described their guessing Valve Body to the tune of $3800. Does this sound reasonable? Of course they won't know for sure until they have the car, but I'm having a hard time with that amount in view of what the cars worth. Anybody swap out a VB themselves? I would think I'd still have to have some computer work done afterwards. Thoughts?

Normally, if it gets out of drive but shifts OK I'd take a look at the shifter linkage. When you put in Drive you manually engage a plunger in the valve body so I'd make sure (before starting the spending race) the actual lever on the tranny moves to the correct location, and that's done by the shifter linkage. One test is to put the shifter in D and try to move the tranny lever by hand (w/out moving the shifter) if you can your linkage is loose.
