I bought a 99 Volvo s70 with about 130,000 miles about a year ago. At about 140,000 the flashing arrow came on after I had the radiator replaced. I am suspicious that the garage may have contaminated the tranny fluid when they opened the system because of the tranny cooler in the radiator. I ran the codes and came up with a 1057 (generic code) and 0758, solenoid b failure.
First thing I did was flush the system using the technique I found on the site. The fluid was extremely dark but smelled okay. The magnetic drain plug attracted a lot of fine dark gray metallic silt. After the replacing the old fluid with new fluid everything worked great for about 1700 miles.
At that time the flashing arrow came back. I replaced the fluid again, but this time I only replaced what was in the pan using the drain plug only. The gray silt was present, but not as bad. The change worked again, but this time only for about 200 miles.
I ordered the green clips to prepare for another flush, but in the meantime I drained and replaced the pan fluid again. The gray silt was again present, but less.
I plan to flush the tranny again. I am suspicious of the flow through the transmission cooler. i am considering disconnecting the lower hose for about 30 seconds to verify that there is fluid flow. I will let everyone know the results as they come up
