Plain and simple, are the left & right front door check straps on 850s the same, or are they specific to each side of the vehicle?
I need a left front (US D/S) door strap; I want OEM, the only options via FCP for OE is right side, or a URO part that just states "front," no particular side. Asking FCP via their, very slow, "Live Chat" feature they tell me that their OE right side door check won't work on my front left door. However, I called the local Volvo dealer, and their parts department said the left & right door checks are the same. Contradicting info and limited useful Google results brought me to ask you guys.
Thanks, in advance!

Same PN for Front Right and Front Left.
PN 9187591.
Believe it or not, Volvo dealer sometimes sells this cheaper than other people. Here is a Volvo dealer selling it for $40-$43:

I just use Vadis for early part lookups you can download it for free as a image file on torrents or pay on fleabay. Cheap and accurate.

It's the same part for 850 (part # is 9133340 - reversible and stamped with FL or FR on the corresponding side).bigdaddylee82 wrote:Plain and simple, are the left & right front door check straps on 850s the same, or are they specific to each side of the vehicle?

The redesigned part for my 98 is side-specific as I observed.
Genuine Volvo is indeed the way to go as fitment of aftermarket are sometimes hit or miss.

I finally fixed my door check problem, again, more on that later, but for now I discovered the answer to my question. Yes, like most of you all said, the door check strap is "universal," front left works on front right, and vice versa, however after removing my original door check, I understand why FCP might have been reluctant to tell me yes it'll work. Pictures are worth a thousand words:
First issue, my original check strap was mounted with bolts, but as you can see the new one uses studs. Not a major issue, just required an unexpected trip to the hardware store for some 6mm nuts. Additionally the new check strap's spring is significantly larger than the original. This made installation more difficult, the larger spring hinders maneuvering the check strap inside the door, and the larger spring presses against the door wiring harness when installed. I don't believe the spring pressing against the wiring harness will be an issue, but maybe something worth considering, since the original didn't touch the harness. After all was said and done I had a new door check strap but, the noise my door made was even worse than before, thanks to my new, non-worn-out check causing even more strain on the actual problem; the door check mount on the A-pillar was broken inside, and the metal around it had began to crack due to the strain.
I knew this was a common problem, but had read others having failed/broken/cracked check straps making similar noise too. When I removed the old check strap and saw this crack, I thought replacing it would solve my problem. Time to back up and punt. More on that later...

Door checks, not check straps
Side specific and I wouldn't go through repairing these unless you really know what you're doing, not that expensive, just replace it
The alternative is not so much fun!

Thanks for posting the question. My newly acquired '96 855 has the same problem with the Driver's Front door. Now, after reading your trials and tribulations, I have more of a perspective on the situation.
I've been told many times that there are no dumb questions but plenty of dumb answers. There may be exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, someone else (me) just learned something by you stepping up and asking. Thank you.
