940 - Rear silencer to be replaced

Post by Metallo »

I folks,

Here again to ask your advice.
Yesterday the sun was shining and the spring was in the air, so I decided to change my winter tires for the summer ones, wash the car with my pressure washer and get rid of all the winter mud and salt.
Once the car was shining, I noticed some rust on the exhaust (Picture 1) then I went down on my knees and found what you see on Pictures 2,3,4,5.

Well, I thought, after 16 years (of which 15 slept outside in all sorts of climates) it seems the time came to replace at least the rear part of the silencer.
The car passed the yearly MOT inspection one month ago, which means all the parameters are still in the norm.

Now, since pictures speak more than words, and since I am planning to do the job myself, I'd like to know:

1) Level of difficulty, I guess removing is more difficult than setting up a new one.
2) Which silencer material is on the market? Aluminized steel, stainless steel? I live in Canada...snow, ice etc.
3) After-market, any brand you can suggest, I had a quick look and saw Bosal, Walker and more.

Any suggestion is most welcome! :)

Many thanks!
Alex

Hi guys,

I finally found the time to replace the muffler and it works fine, the only strange thing is that the muffler is not horizontal with the ground but leans 1 inch towards the front side, to be clear, the part connected to the tail pipe is higher than the part connected to the exhaust pipe between front and rear mufflers... OK a couple of pictures show it all better

Honestly I did not pay attention how it was before, but there is not much margin of mistake, fix points to hang it and that's it.

What do you think?

(when you click the pictures, wait 5 secs for them to appear)

Actually, if you look at the pictures I posted on my first post on top of this thread, the difference is that the brace on the old muffler was more in the center of it, while now is more towards the tail pipe, but the thing is, this is how naturally stays if hanging from its hooks, as it was before was really forced to the center and I am not sure this is right, although, it stayed there for 16 years.
