2001 V70XC - VIDA DiCE is useless...

Post by xHeart »

... without MVS Mavericks.

Both our cars are running CEL free for few weeks, no visible fluid leak. Wow! Thanks you ALL for premium gas at $2.239/gallon.

But there is a clear, loud metal to metal knock at morning start -- the moment before engine start after the crank. It was once in a while, but occurring frequently since this Fall.

This morning first two tries engine cranked but did not start. Third time, it cranked, then one metal-to-metal knock, and started -- it doesn't take more than few seconds for engine to start.

Any thoughts?

Assuming you have the correct oil and level - the knock is high pitched and coming from top of engine or deep and from bottom? Or is it coming from engine or exhaust? More detail needed.

Engine oil and filter replaced around thanksgiving. I will check the level again.
Not a high pitch, suspecting lower engine.

Lower engine knocks are caused by connecting rod bearing wear and it's pretty rare, unless a catastrophic event took place - lack of oil or pressure or engine has lots of miles. Did not see a mention of low press. light. First effect is low oil pressure due to larger clearances at conn rod bearing. So for peace of mind you could check oil pressure. I'd also investigate more just to make sure of location.

There is no CEL at this time.
Would connecting DiCE and reading oil level and sender data over VIDA provide any clue?
I am assuming engine idles for taking this reading?

I will ask girls to play echolocation game each morning this week.

Many thanks.

Oil pressure sender on block is not a variable device. It's just a short to ground with no or low oil pressure.

You need a guage type sender tapped in to the block.

The metal-to-metal knock is absent, or I did not hear.
Is there a helpful reference for "gauge type sender tapped" Mike, -- perhaps loan-a-tool at Autozone or likes?

Thanks for the pointer.
O'reilly loans one with multiple connector types.
