Oxygen sensor difference?

Is the only difference between the upstream and downstream O2 sensors the length of the wire? Also, what's the deal with the adapters?

Yes.
Connectors are slightly different because of index pin position,but can be connected without problems if index pin is grounded,but not neccessary.

It is an perfect indication of upstream or downstream that there may be a different length.
The adapters were introduced for an alternate down tube design.
They do not always think ahead.

When I searched a replacement for my front one, the rear one had a completely different design, and this for several Volvo engines. I believe they don't work the same, but it's only my supposition. The prices are also quite different. There is also a portion on the wire where the sensor is measuring the outside oxygen content.

I got a NTK (same as NGK) off Ebay for $100 and works well.

I do not have the exact part # handy.
Use Bosch only.

Edit: I realize you may be posting in the wrong forum. My answer applies to '93 to '98 850 series.
I am not versed as to '03 S60. Apologies.
