Hello,
Does anyone happen to know the tap size and thread pitch of the hydraulic return port on an 850 steering rack. Cannot thread the fitting into the port of a brand new rack, thinking there may be a burr on one of the threads. Looking at it under the car, the threads look fine but the fitting threads in a turn or two, than can't turn it anymore. I'm going to remove the rack again and check it further, thinking I might have to chase the threads with a tap. I'm guessing they are pipe threads.
Thanks!

You should be able to see the taper on a pipe thread - look closely at the loose fitting or even put a straight edge on it. I haven't been into a rack in a long time but I don't recall seeing pipe threads used here.

Thanks, I believe you are correct, it doesn't look like pipe threads. I don't have a thread gauge or a caliper to measure. Saw Autozone has a thread restorer kit on the tool loan program, probably have a tap that would work. Only have to clean the first couple threads.

to those who may know.. Is there a different port on the SMI vs TRW racks?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I have a TRW rack out of the car, but maybe you (OP) do now too. Let me know if I can measure something for you.

Thanks, that would have been a help. I was, however, able to clean the threads without a tap and was able to install the fitting. Reinstalled the rack and everything is fine now.
