1999 V70 Bypassed heater core and coolant is still leaking

Post by sammydadavis »

So I had my radiator replaced around 2 months ago and just last week as I was driving home my coolant light came on. I was taking it to get checked out at a local garage and I started seeing smoke through the dash, which I soon learned meant my heater core was faulty. No one in my area was willing to do heater core replacements so I just bypassed it, but not before I had a puddle of coolant in my back and front passenger side seats.

I took it on a test drive after the bypass and it was still leaking, light came on after 5 minutes of driving through town. I pulled over and there was a visible leak under the car so I let it run in park for about an hour today and drove it around the block a few times to see if I could find where the leak was. It looked like there was a leak around one of the hoses that connect to the expansion tank. Is it more likely that the expansion tank is leaking or the hose attached to it? how would I know the difference and is it feasible for me to replace them myself or should I try to find someone in the area?

The expansion tans and caps are known to bad on these cars after 16 years. Inspect it and replace when you find the crack
