1997 850 Base A/C question

Looking at a 97 850 base, which has no sunroof and the A/C does not blow cold air. The compressor cycles on/off rapidly, but there are no dash flashing lights. Can I assume that this is 1 of 3 issues:

1) The infamous evaporator failed
2) The clutch needs adjusted
3) The system just needs re-pressurising

Are there any other issues that I should consider?

Since it's cycling on and off rapidly,it means that there is some amount of pressure in the system,but not enough to function properly.
If there is no gas in it it would not even turn the compressor on.
Good ac service will tell you everything about it.

So if I understand you correct, there is a 'chance' the system just needs re-gassing. By a A/C service do you mean a vacuum and refill with new refrigerant and oil?

I was trying to see if it was worth spending the money to have the system re-filled with dye to check it out, but if the view was the system was likely needing a new evaporator, I'd rather put the money and time into that.

I would do it professionally.So....yes a complete sequnce should be performed.Vacuuming,checking and re-filling.
Since the system is low on gas it could also be low on oil which would be bad for a compressor if you just add a can of r134a by yourself.

If the system can be vacuumed there is a good chance that it just need re-gassing.If vacuuming sequence can't be performed,that would indicate a leak and,normally,the service shop would not go further with re-filling.

Many thanks again. That was my plan to have it done professionally. There is a local repair shop that I trust 100% and don't do more than they need to unless they check with you first.

Only one way to find out!!!
