Replacing Seat Belt Receiver 99 V70 XC

Hello all

1st - apologies, too long have I read this forum without registering

2nd - buckle in my wife's wagon keeps 'popping' the belt out. I purchased a replacement YET on preparing to instal it the thought occurred 'Man! that would SUCK to get punched in the face by a side-airbag if I don't have this procedure down to nth degree!"

To that end, I have searched youtube, this forum and elsewhere and have not found a good step by step process with photos so my wife doesn't find me laid out 'cold' beside her wagon

Does anyone know of, or have such a procedure or SOP on this task.

Any and all tips on removing these seats appreciated as I can see no way to remove the old part without doing so.

You just have to turn off the car, disconnect the negative battery terminal, then you can do the electrical disconnects on the seat and remove it.

In 1999, Volvo went to SIPS which fired the side air bag electrically instead of by impact sensor.

You must reconnect all the seat connectors before powering up, or else you trigger an SRS (airbag light) light and Volvo will vacuum $150 bucks from you to fix. Plus, you have to drive to Billings and miss the bison on the way.

(Someone with a fairly high end scanner can actually reset the SRS, not just dealer.)

I just did this job on my 1998 S70 this past weekend. I have the mechanically fired SIPS seats so I did not have to disconnect the battery. You will.

To get the driver's seat out, first remove the four 14mm bolts. Then recline both front seats and adjust the steering wheel closest to the instrument cluster. NOW you can disconnect the battery and the seat electrical connectors. You definitely want to remove all the bolts and recline the seats BEFORE disconnecting the battery and the electrical connectors or you won't be able to adjust the seat position and recline.

The seat can now be wrestled out of the front door. That sucker is heavy, so a helper and well placed protective towels around the door opening are recommended.

Reinstallation is the reverse of above.

My replacement buckle came with the full wiring harness for it.

When replacing the buckle, you'll see the routing of the wires to the buckle goes up and over the seat recline pivot. I had to remove two of the "hog rings" to route the wires, and reinstalled them afterwards. The heated seat wiring was also part of the same connector as the buckle wiring. I found it easiest to run the new buckle and its wiring harness all the way, and splice the heated seat wiring. I wasn't going to try to do further surgery on the seat to find the seat heating pad connectors.

Take your time, and take pics of the wiring routing before removing anything.

I've seen seat belts do that kind of thing
when somethings falls into the receiver slot.
Are you sure it's clear of any foreign objects?

+1 on the crap in the receiver slot. I have replaced 2 before I realised there was nothing wrong with the originals other than crap in the receiver slot.

1. I'll go check it NOW to see if there is any 'crap' lodged inside

We have a son with Down syndrome and have had the most unusual items pulled from toilets including
a) Toy Manatee
b) Titanium Spork

Because of his ability to place itemA in slot Z where one would NEVER suspect it'd fit NOTHING would surprise me when I look in there with a good light (up to and including Amelia Earhart or the Lindberg Baby)

2. Failing finding anything inside the latch I'll proceed with the seat removal steps when I have a helper and everything arranged ... I am still ''recovering' (i.e., very sore) from replacing the heater core

Doesn't the 1999 on release the receiver buckle without seat removal via a tab down low?

On edit - IDIOT! - the belt side releases via tab, the receiver does not.

This is still useful info as you don't have to unbolt the seatbelt to get the seat out, just push the tab and unclip the belt from seat.
