850 rear flexi-brake hoses. How to replace?

Post by scot850 »

I had the 97 850 up in the air at the back today to replace the fuel filter (looks like the original!!). While under there I had a look at replacing the rear flexi hoses (fronts already just done), but can't figure out how the heck you get access to them? Typical Volvo they sit above the rear axle.

Do you have to support the car so the rear suspension can drop to it's lowest to give (slightly) better access?

Appreciate the guidance as always!

Here you go:

DIY: 98 V70 Brake Hydraulic Overhaul (Hoses, Seals, Parking):
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=37721

The hose above the delta link: remove the following items as a single entity:

Driver's side Y-connector ---> pipe ---> flex hose ---> pipe ---> RR caliper.

Then deal with the whole thing outside of the car. Chances are you need propane torch to undo the connection.
Don't try to d/c the connection at the pipe + RR caliper, chances are you will round off the nut.

That is kind of what I thought. Access is a real pain for either, but the RH rear is near impossible to get to short of what you suggest and remove the whole thing. Me thinks it can stay there for now and I'll fix the other stuff first and if time allows come back to it!

The info is great and thanks for the link!

Best tool I've found, besides heat, for brake lines is this Vise Grip. Believe cn90 has used as well.

There are a couple of sizes available.

Looks like a good tool to add to all the other Vice Grips I have, lol!! Seriously looks like a well thought out bit of kit. Dear Santa,...

I may still pass on this repair although it will depend on if I fix everything else in time first. Otherwise my brother may have to get it done later.

Thanks for the input.

I wouldn't use Vice Grips for these nuts, they are extremely soft (copper). Once it got rounded you have to replace the whole line.

I have so far had good success with my trusty (expensive) Snap-on brake pipe wrench (can never remember what you guys on this side of the Atlantic call it). I'm sure it will let me down at some point but so far so good!

I have done a few of these and so far have always been able to release the nut in situ by using a Craftsman flare wrench. Knock on wood.

erik, what is the best way to access the lines? ?Is it best to support the car so the load is off the suspension allowing it to drop to it's lowest, or with the suspension loaded?

Thanks,

Neil.
