Suspension advice

Post by crashworld »

Hello, I took my 2000 S40 in for a NYS inspection today and the mechanic showed me some areas of the suspension that could use work. The steering has a drag to the left and the ride is a bit rough over bumps. I mainly use the car to drive in the city and park in the street.

Attached are photos of what I saw today.

Below are links to two kits of parts. Are these ideal? I would not be performing this myself but want to provide the mechanic with the right parts.

Thank you for your advice.

Before you shelling out $700.00. Do this:

1. Open hood.
2. Stand on the side of car.
3. Grab underside of fender.
4. Fix your eyes on the top of the Struts.
5. Lift up on the car.

Are the Struts moving around in the Strut mount?
Strut mounts can be replaced for a lot less then the Struts.

When I first got my 2003 S40, it sounded like it was going to fall apart every time I irregularity in the road. New Strut mounts fixed that.

How many miles on this car?
How often do you drive it?
How far are your trips?
Does the car bounce a lot?

It looks typically rusty for a northeast car. I'd actually be a little concerned with those rusty rear brake lines.
Yes the drag link with the torn rubber boot should be fixed.

In addition to checking the strut mounts, I would check the sway bar end links. It would not be surprising to find them worn out at 19 years old. They will also make clunking sounds when they're worn out.

As for changing all the springs, struts etc. and everything else in the "kit", it is very difficult to tell if they need replacement from photos. Also, I'm not a huge fan of eBay parts that I'm not familiar with. You may want to also look at parts prices from the sponsors of this website like FCP Euro and eEuroparts etc. The sponsors generally have good reputations for supplying quality products.
