Differences in 2005 XC90 2.5T CV axles

Post by gletourneau »

I've been trying to find this information in the forums but have been unsuccessful, so forgive me if this is a topic that has been covered before. I recently ordered some new wheel bearing hub assemblies and CV axles for my 2005 XC 2.5T, and discovered that the passenger side axle fit on the transmission side, but the spline diameter on the wheel hub side is larger than the original CV axle. The wheel hub assembly is the same size as the original, and after I did some digging it appears they used two different CV axles as I see some fine print fitment notes saying "up to Chassis/VIN xxxxx" or "after Chassis/VIN xxxxx". I'm assuming these are the last digits of the VIN - is that correct? I thought I bought the right axle where my VIN corresponded to the right axle option but apparently I made a mistake.

Secondly, when I look up the axle bolt for the 2005, I only see the long version of the bolt, not the short version with the rubber cone. That bolt shows up as 2006+. Again, I'm assuming somebody retrofitted this as a fix for axle ping. Or - is it possible this 2005 XC90 has 2006 CV axles, and I did buy what would have been the right axle for mine if somebody hadn't already replaced the axles and hubs? If anyone has any insights into what axles and bolts were used specifically in the 2005 XC90 2.5T I'd really love to hear them.

From the Volvo parts webstore

There is a chassis break and the axle amd screw both change. Sizes are given, so compare those to your stuff to confirm fitment.
