You're probably right about the failure point. It's a 20+ year old unit, after all.
New ones can be had on ebay for about 40 USD, but a salvage yard with some nice sedans might be a good option as well.

It's always a bad idea to throw parts at these cars before knowing what the issue is - as in, it gets expensive really quickly. On 9454041 it looks like it’s going to a check valve from the purge valve for the evap. This has me confused now as well.

It’s also worth checking the fuel pump relay (as someone suggested) and fuel pump. Low pressure or unevenly operating pump will cause your symptoms, and probably not set a code that will stay until you get a readout.
