Re: Spring seat / strut question
The strut post has a shoulder that is supposed to sit up against the underside of the bushing in the spring seat. Then, the crossnut that you can't see from above because it's under the large mount washer on top, tightens down onto the top of the springseat bushing. Properly installed, that prevents...

Re: Cruise Control Intermittently working-- stumped
I looked this up recently, also, due to same symptoms in my 96 base 850. I haven't solved mine but I will explore one suggestion: the control module in the fuse box. Somebody confirm this, I think it's the one next to the headlight module. In that post I think someone suggested cleaning the contacts...

Re: 1999 V70XC Rear brake caliper rebuild kit?
The 99 and 00 xc's that I've seen at the junk yard all had ATE double piston, apparently the same caliper that's been used on the 850' since 93. If the mounting hardware is the same, you might be better off to source a pair of used ATE's and use as is or rebuild them. A shop in Minneapolis that can r...

Re: 850 rear flexi-brake hoses. How to replace?
There are 2 problems with the rear brakes that eventually cause hair loss on the frustrated P80 owner. The main one is the seized brake line fitting at the rear wheel calipers. Sometimes you can get the left side fitting to loosen, the right side is almost always extremely hard to impossible to crac...

Re: New Axle Stuck in Transmission
Another cautionary tale that doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of the cv joint—it's the loose fitting circlip that doesn't know it's supposed to contract fully into its groove as it moves into the tapered receiving piece. Instead, it hits the face of the receiving piece that's flat, not getti...

CV Axles - accurate fitting CV axle boot
I found the best place to get the most accurate fitting cv axle boot (that I could find) is Advance Auto (owns WorldPac distributor). You can order from your car's VIN. The boot I repaired with GKN/Lobro fit perfectly on the axle shaft (small end of the boot), I did have to stretch it more than I li...

Re: Los Angeles - running 1993 850 going to the dismantler?
I'm still hanging on to my 93 850 GLT. It had some blemishes when I bought it in 2008—my first Volvo. I'd been looking for a used sedan and suddenly began noticing Volvos all around me in Minneapolis. So when this one popped up on Craigslist, I took it for ride and was immediately smitten. I'd never...

Volvo 850 broken hood cable solution
Two nightmare scenarios that I've thought about when traveling in the 850 are sunroof glass stuck open, you're in a remote area and there's a rain forecast. And your hood cable breaks (hopefully not at the same time that your sunroof is stuck open). But, hey, sh*t does happen. I've seen a few 850's ...
