Re: Heater Core blew during full throttle. Headgasket leaky?

12 years ago my upper radiator hose blew out next to the block. The cam seal was leaking and over time, weakened the hose.

I immediately pulled over and shut the car off but the temp had already hit the top mark.

12 years later, still driving the car, and no blaring issues with HG.

If it's similar to an 850 the worst part of the job is the T45 into the tensioner or roller or whatever it goes into. The wp wasn't that big of a deal, I don't remember being tough, I can't remember if I used some sort of sealant on the bolts though, a permatex of sorts. Maybe. https://www.youtube.c...

To get the axle in IIRC you just kinda mush it gingerly into place and kinda push/pop the CV joint to pop it in. Or maybe you can just push it. I'm not sure if there is a circlip or not on that side. I remember it being easy. You should probably pick up a new rim too, looks like it was whacked prett...

I bought my axle from Advance Auto Parts for $52 five years ago (with a coupon). Came with a lifetime warranty. Haven't needed to use it. Don't buy name brand stuff, it's 20 years old with 237,000 miles. Just put generic stuff on there. If you want to keep it. Swapping the control arm is pretty stra...

Ok. Another update.

It's not the white cap that causes it to "close" (and go to 0 ohms). That was just causing me to pull the button.

What you have to do is fully pull on the button with your fingernails.

I created a video. Hope this makes more sense!! :D

It looks like terminals 3-4 don’t do anything as there is no connections there. You probably don't need springs. They don't wear out unless they break.

I used Sachs all around IIRC from FCP. I did a four corners refresh five years ago, car drove much better. Not quite new but pretty nice.

I would definitely replace the strut mounts as well.

Also any thoughts on the 2008+ model years? I really like the inside and outside of those cars, but I realize the mid 2000's would be easier to work on (electronically). Which is another scare of mine - the 850 was the last of the "pre-electronic" cars. My neighbor going on 4 years and friend since...

Agreed. There may be a 1996 Volvo 850 in the local (Durham LKQ) junkyard (maybe because the photos and links are not working for that particular listing). If it is really there, it's probably a 50-50 chance to have an ECC system. https://www.lkqpickyourpart.com/locations/LKQ_Self_Service_Durham-142...

Ok I cleared codes and pulled them again this morning. Blower did turn on (about halfway to medium) for a few minutes, then died. Only repeat code is 4-1-8. I found this typed up by Lee: The 4-1-4 code won't keep the blower from operating but the 4-1-8 code will. Chances are it is a bad "power stage...

Blower motor verrrrry slow and then slows to a stop, flashing ECC

Hey So last winter I noticed my fan quit blowing. I shut off car and repowered and everything has been Ok. Today starting up I notice the blower motor is running kinda weak. On my drive home it just shuts off and the ECC starts flashing. De-power/re-powering does not bring it back. Let car sit a few...

I bought a spare replacement from our local chain tire shop, Discount Tire. It was $70.

Had I known a full sized wheel would've fit in there I would've just bought a used rim and tire off CL for ~$25.

I personally have never had luck reattaching that rubber gasket. It just keeps falling off.

Chances are with that many miles that is a classic RMS leak. Good news is since you already dropped the transmission to fix it's super easy to fix. Just R&R. Just buy a dedicated transmission cooler and route through there, would think that would be a better coolant system than running through the radiator and would also prevent coolant->transmission fluid leakage which will kill your transmission in short order.

I was told by a vendor that the accumulators they are shipping now have the dryer function activated when oil hits it. So an open dryer won't be an issue as it hasn't absorbed any moisture at that point.

A head gasket job, done properly, is going to run upwards of $1k and if you have been driving this thing for a year like this, water in the oil doesn't protect bearings/surfaces from friction. The important thing to check is if it comes on at a high pressure, then cuts out at a low pressure. That would indicate low charge.

If it wasn't doing that several weeks ago, you've got a big leak and start looking around.

Scarp value is around $0.10/lb for entire cars. Don't list it as a parts car because you will scare away a lot of people. Re: How often do you guys flush your ATF?

A 15/16" works as well (almost same size as 24mm). I also used a socket and short extension, which is nice because you can use a 6 point socket with less chance for rounding out the large bolt.

I've done the same as Ozark but have used a block of wood in the shape of a wedge. Also used a prybar. You have to pry against the trans case or it will come apart.

If it's blowing fuses it might be time to replace the motor assembly. It's not bad to do, fairly quick and inexpensive used on eBay or a yard. To verify you could put a clamp on the wire leading to it, then check the fuse rating, but if you are putting new fuses in and they are blowing there is a re...

The passenger side will simply slide in and the bearing cap should hold it correctly if seated all the way in. The drivers side has a ring that must be compressed internally as you push it in. You should feel it set. It requires some taps and a bit of force.

I've done it both ways and prefer to keep the motor in the car. If you have an engine hoist and a engine support bar you can easily separate the tranny and drop it down out the bottom.

That being said if you have more experience pulling the motor than go that way.

1999 V70, large RPM dip right at start. RPM dip when stoppin

On my '99 V70, what I thought was an ETM issue is not. The ETM is the XmodeX model and talking to them, running the fuse test, it checks out A-OK. What is happening is right on start, when the car lights off, the RPM goes up (normal) but falls quickly to sub 500 RPM, burps, then goes back to a consi...

If they replaced the pump seal on it, it shouldn't be leaking again, that is really soon. I'm not quite sure exactly what you are asking though.

By the title of the thread it sounds like you are referring to the rear main seal, the crank seal.

That's incredible (in a bad way). You definitely used up all your bad luck and a whole bunch of mine (thanks BTW). I didn't even know these cars could crack like that. What would do that? Is a HG failure that catastrophic? That would take a ton of energy to blow out the side of the motor like that.

Krylon Fusion black worked on my VW.

Any sort of wipe on/dye is not going to work long term and will probably just make a mess.

To do this properly you need to mask off the area and paint it.

Re: Should a/c compressor cycle on/off while driving?

Venturi style. I cranked the output pressure up to 120-130 psi. Brought it down to roughly 29". Not great but not bad. I know a true vacuum pump is better. However when I did it, I pulled it down and closed the service port. Rose rapidly from 29". This either indicates moisture still in system or a ...

Re: Should a/c compressor cycle on/off while driving?

No, just the low side connected.

I might be wrong here on the adapter. But I unscrewed the high pressure switch down by the accumulator and used the quick connect. It does not fit, I tried several times. Looks like there is a screw on adapter? Or am I way off base here?

Re: Should a/c compressor cycle on/off while driving?

Its a standard fitting and line you can get them at most any auto store. Or back to HF for a good price on one. In TN I charge after full vacuum pull down. After a full evacuate the system charge gives me roughly 32 low side ( with charge bottle off and system stabilized) and 200 high side. It cycl...

Re: Aftermarket Control Arm

I haven't tried MOOG parts yet. But I would like to replace my tie rods inner and outer. I was going to go with MOOG as I hear they are quality parts. Where did you get the price above? Rockauto?

Ok at highway rpm it cuts in/out every 6-9 secs. At low rpm its always on. Something is up.

Re: Looking at a 97 850 sedan, any issues I should look for?

$3500 from a dealer would be a fair price for that car on the market. Chances are he bought the thing for $1k though. Or less. I bet there is room from the $4200 but he might come down to say $3800-$3900. For me, if I wanted the car, I wouldn't let another $400 (or less) stop me. You are buying this...

Re: Engine overheated and won't start

Everything you say makes complete sense and I am now convinced what I must do. It's hard to say good-bye to a trusted friend but it boils down to the economics. I'm surprised the end came like it did but it was a good run. We took a lot of great trips in that car and have fond memories. Again, than...
