Sounds to me like you may have a bad expansion valve.
There is a temperature tube/sensor mounted to it (capillary tube) and perhaps that's causing faulty regulation of freon.
I've done a fair amount of those in the past....just can't remember the exact symptoms, sorry.

It's not clear from your post what motor you switched. The cars motor or the blower motor. Also whats surging the engine or the blower motor?

That's correct there is a small amount of adjustment at the bottom strut bolts. With those bolts in one can move the strut in or out slightly to get more or less camber. As the knuckle moves it changes the toe setting slightly, therefore an alignment is a good idea. On my cars I always set the cambe...

How about just switching the cow hide to your manual cloth seats?
Hog rings, a set of hogring pliers and some side cutters(to remove the old hogrings) and everything works again

There are two different flange sizes, vin splits.
