I hadn't thought of the cam grind issue, don't know why not, thanks for that tip, I'll see if I can find that bit of info anywhere. . . I've got a head gasket replacement set and head bolts all ready to go.

That all sounds like a good plan too, but I am of the mind to leave the head on the block that it has been happily mated to for so long. If I can get it without opening it up unnecessarily, that is what I will try first.
