My fuel pump died at 145k miles. It starting buzzing quite noticeably weeks before it died. It also began sputtering just a few hours before quitting. The new pump is silent. So, if you can hear the pump at all, it's on it's way out.

There are lots of ways to route such an overflow hose. The one you mentioned sounds fine except for one thing: there shouldn't be any vacant nipples on the PTC, this suggests a line is dangling open somewhere. Normal. Except the dipstick shouldn't be smoking as the oil is still cold. If you haven't cleaned it lately, the PTC nipple could be starting to clog and need a cleaning. I read about that as well.
