2 polls?

Post by MJJ » Fri Sep 20, 2002 1:45 pm

Matthew,

Are you able to post side-by-side polls, one for 'city' and one for 'highway'?

Done. This poll now concerns Highway fuel economy exclusively.

Thanks

City?

Post by MJJ » Sun Sep 22, 2002 11:46 am

I'm curious about city mileage also as we see a massive difference between hwy and city mileage on our 99 S70 GLT. I really don't think we're lead foots either (well, I'm not, but I don't know about my wife!). I'll start another poll!

Higway mileage

Post by mathieu1 » Mon Oct 07, 2002 10:33 pm

I actually got 36 mpg during a recent trip returning to Dallas from Tulsa. I attained this magic number during a series of tests of fuel consumption in my '98 S70 T5 at various speeds from 100 to 50 mph for 10-mile intervals on the Indian Nation Turnpike; results ranged from ~15 mpg at 100 mph to the mentioned 36 at 50 mph. My trip average was just shy of 30 mpg, which constitutes a RARE occurrence for me, since I was only able to achieve such a conservative economy by averaging 70 mph for the entire trip. I am typically "wont to flaunt" the wonderfully smooth and stable nature of my T5 at highway speeds between 80 and 90 but, in the interest of science, I somehow found the necessary restraint to complete this test. It was somewhat of a shock to find that my Turbo is capable of more (or less) than I have come to expect of it, thirst-wise!

My only long trip in my 95 859 N/Q is when I go home. I live in Nashville but I grew up in Philly. It's a very mountainous ride from Nashville until I get to almost Baltimore and I average a tick under 28 at about 75MPH. I wish I could try it on a long flat stretch of highway someday. Maybe I need to go to Kansas for something. I have to believe that 2/3'rd of the trip lugging it up and down mountains is worth a few mpg.

Just finished a trip from Clearwater, FL to Marathon (Keys) and I got some funny readings along the way. Driving between 75-80mph I recorded 23mpg, 75mph mixed with some 60-65mph yielded me 24.7 and the surprise was driving from 45 to 60mph got me a 33.7mpg. Although it was a short trip of only 75miles (from Marathon to Homestead expressway) it felt good seeing that the car is capable of getting better mpg at lower speeds. Now the AC was on full blast on all situations and the car drives on Sport mode only. New Falken ziex 912s up front and 80% tread in the rear with 37psi cold. Was hoping to sit at around 27mpg with cruise control set at 75mph but being a heavy car, it is to be expected.

At 85mph, 850s (4-speed auto transmissions) run at 3k RPM in 4th, which is far too high to be economical.

Just an info point.

highest i ever got on a tank was 30.1 traveling across PA, east-to-west. usually i get closer to 27 on the highway, going 70-75.

this is measured with tanks and miles; i find the dashboard readout is typically pretty pessimistic.
