Gas gauge is reading in liters and not gallons?

Post by warcoy99 »

I recently bought the manual and it says the gas tank is 18 liters. does that mean my gas gauge is reading in liters and not gallons?

I'm pretty sure that all of the Volvo instrument clusters are in gallons at least if your main speed read out is in MPH.

its not saying 18 liters it is 18 or i believe an 18.5 gallon tank. to compare it to mine it should step down like this [18/12/6/2]

18 liters is also only 4.7 Gallons so that would be one tiny fuel tank!

Correct, it's an 18.5 gallon tank, and all instrument cluster modules in North American and Asian markets (not sure about Euro market) display fuel in gallons. You'll have either 18 or MAX as the "full" indication depending on whether you have a Motronic 4.3 (pre-'99) or CAN ('99-'00) cluster.

19.3 gallon tank to accomadate the expansion of the petrol. When filling up, the pump will only fill it up to 18 and some change gallons.

Which apparently you should never overfill by a lot because it screws up some sensor? Is that correct?

Also, apparently S70 non-turbos have a 68L capacity while turbo have 70L. Given that AWD takes more space, how did they manage to expand the gas tank by an extra 2L?

No, it doesn't mess up any sensors. But you are right you shouldn't do it becuase it will force excess petrol into the EVAP system and charcoal canister.
