Where to buy 40 Torx 7" extension bit (Thermostat job)?

Post by genie »

Hi,

I tried to change the thermostat without the extension 40T. As expected FAILED. The local shops don't have it, that's why I didnot had it in the first place. Can anyone advise on where to buy? Thanks
Ihsan

Did you try Sears Craftsman or your local Snap On dealer?

The sears didn't have it. And we don't have snap-on in state college. Only Pepboys and advance auto parts. Neither of the above had it. However, I've found an online retailer. I ordered it.
Thanks though.

Super, glad you found it. Wish I could give you a special hint or two, but the thermostat's so straightforward, there's nothing tricky :D.

You know those allen wrenches that have multiple sizes that fold from each side over each other. They make that in a torks and it was just long enough to reach the rear bolt on my thermostat. I used it to break the bolt free and then used a flat head screwdriver of proper size to back the bolt all the way out. No damage what so ever to the bolt.

AutoZone sells a kit that has long torx drivers in it. A red and black handle that each one slips into so you can get some torque on it too...a bit pricey...just under $20 for the set. It includes the T40.

My local Sears and NAPA did NOT have it. I don't have access to SNAP-ON.

Perhaps you could try Harbor Freight. I bought mine at McMaster...

I had the same problem with a short torx not fitting in on my 97 850. Very easy solution though at zip cost. Start car, remove fuel pump fuse under hood and let the car run out of fuel. Then, using the correct flare nut wrench, remove the fuel line that is actually in the way of the torx nut and then you have the access you need. Job done and no futzing around. BTW thin wrenches work better in this slightly confined area than a thick Craftsman.

According to Robert J who left a message on the Replace Thermostat DIY page, the Snap On T40 Torx extra long bit did it. Part number FTXEL40E2, here -> http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/parts/pr ... _id=683308

$10
