1998 V70 Cambelt change with hydraulic tensioner

Post by frontrow »

Hi folks

There's such a mish mash of info re which models have mechanical or hydraulic timing belt tensioners so I just grubbed in and pulled my cover to check what my wagon has..... and indeed I do have a hydraulic tensioner on my Australian delivered V70 AWD (build date of 7/97).

Funnily enough my workshop manual purports to cover models from 1996 - 2000 however doesn't even mention a hydraulic tensioner!???

I'm sure the procedure for doing the cambelt change has been discussed before however I haven't been able to track it down by searching. Could I trouble someone to please point me in the right direction re this job?

Cheers in advance

Over here we call them timing belts :)

This is one of the best write-ups on the subject:

It features a turbo engine so some of the parts may differ, but the steps should be the same.

Take a peek at this page and you'll see plenty of other help:

It's the same as the 850. Turbo or not it's the same. Easy to follow.

As for the tensioner, compress it with a clamp very slowly, maybe 1/2 turn every 5 minutes. If it leaks any fluid, change it.

If you need a hand the first time around, and you're in my area (Northern suburbs) more than happy to lend a hand with your cambe...I mean timing belt. We can exchange some ideas about the maintenance of these beasts and share a common interest. PM me if that appeals.
