96 850 Wagon...Can anyone tell me what this part is?

I recently took apart and cleaned up my pnp switch in hopes that it would clear up my up arrow issue and the shifting (or the lack thereof) issues I was having. While getting into things I found this part with the wire cut in half or heat damaged. I have searched online and have made a couple of trips to the auto part store, I have yet to find out what this part is. Attached you can see the part.. and where it came from.

Thanks for the quick reply, this was my first guess, but the bottom appears slightly different. It doesn't have the small circular metal piece. Also being a novice I wasn't sure where the crankshaft sensor went. Do you know if its the same sensor with a new look?

I went to Rock Auto as they usually carry several brands. Two looks more like yours but the 3rd does not. I am assuming that is a Stock (Generic) Photo so not to worry. If your car starts the part is OK and should you need to purchase one I think you should receive the correct part.

100% for sure that is the crank sensor.

I agree with BKM that you don't need to replace it if the car is starting OK. But if you hit a no-start condition, that is the first place I would check. Maybe pick up a spare from a junkyard.

Erik and BKM, Thanks for the replies. I just unpluged that sensor, and the car still started fine and ran at an idle. I have been having shifting problems however and took apart and cleaned up the PNP switch, afterwards I took the car out for a test drive and it ran great for about the first 11 miles, then I think it went into limp mode and just got me home. I redid the PNP switch figuring I had got it but then lost it somewhere during the drive, this is when I found this sensor with the one wire cut or heat damaged. I repaired the wire as best I could and now have no gears at all. You can hear it go into gear and it feels as though it R or D, however when you press on the acclerator it acts as though it isn't fully engaged.

Just thought I would give an update. I have learned that it is the RPM/Engine Speed Sensor. Now its just a matter of finding one. Thanks Erik and DKM for your help!

LOL, yea, when I seen the first photo I knew it was a speed sensor. Cars prior to '96 don't have that one their transmissions.

Not the crank sensor or RPM/engine speed sensor. That sensor is on a bracket connected to the block. It is the vehicle speed sensor for the transmission. It connects to the TCM.
The part is the same for 96-98 year models of 850 and s/v/c70.

I have one of those in the bag but I just looked and I can't find it to give the part number.
