These are from fcp and are similar in price to genuine volvo: what are some of the qualities of ?cermaic? pads, more squeal? I like the idea of no dust.

Should I get them?

Anybody use them or know of somebody who uses them?

Don't know anyone who uses them...I'm sure they are superior pads and as long as you use the silicone paste on the backs and between the shims they should not squeek. The reason I stay with my very dusty OEM pads is because I know they don't eat the rotors like many of the "tougher" less dusty pads. I can typically go 2 sets of pads with each rotor (never turn them...that's a no no on Volvo's). I have heard that with more aggressive pads you end up replacing the rotors with each set of pads....dont' know however about these Akebono's.

I went with the PBR Ceramic pads. I like them, they seem to work great, but I have no experience with other pads on this car. I thought they would give off less dust than they do. If these are dustless I'd hate to see what the OEM pads were like. My rotors are drilled Brembo.

I have ceramic pads on my other car (94 Seville) and have no problem with brake dust at all. Don't know if it's the PBR pads or what but I would be interested to hear the experiences of others.

i have never used ceramic or drilled rotors but i'd think drilled rotors might be more abrasive on pads. interested in seeing other responses. i've been thinking of getting new ones myself. gotta love that reverb/vibration you get when the rear rotors warp in the 850 wagon. it's torturesome.

The drilled rotors are why you are getting lots of dust. The holes allow the gas build up pass through for better contact of the pad, the drawback is that the rotors are a bit abrasive to the pads and you are grinding down you pads with the holey rotors. The ceramic pad will last longer than any others but they also will build up more heat during heavy braking - more heat and the greater the chance of warping the rotor.

Unless you are racing this car there is no need for the additional performance of the drilled rotors (slotted are even worse - drilled and slotted are the extreme). Ceramic pads are a blessing and a curse for brake systems. The harder material will last longer and also give off less dust. As I stated earlier the heat is also a problem. The heat build up is what stops you. The breakdown of the brake fluid is what you experience with brake fade.

For a street driven vehicle the best setup for the longevity/performance trade off is a high carbon rotor (no slots or drilled), synthetic DOT 4, and ceramic pads. The syn DOT 4 will not break down as quick and it can handle the higher temps better - it is also good practice to purge you fluid every two years.

BTW: I use Brembo rotors, NAPA Premium Ceramic Pads, and Synthetic DOT 4 fluid on this car.

I was getting 20K miles on the front with OEM and 40K on the rear with OEM. At 60K I needed rotors and pads for the front - I went with the Brembo rotors and NAPA Premium Ceramic Pads. The car has about 1/3 of the pad life left when I checked it at the 130K service last month. I swapped out the rear pads at 70K and I still have the oem rear rotors with 1/2 pad life left.

I fitted OMP pads to my 850 T5.

Avoid them like the plague!!

They are only a little bit cheaper than OEM and were marketed as "Performance Pads".

However, they have completely worn out after less than 10000 miles and the performance from them was nowhere near as good as OEM.

I haven't tested it properly, but I'd guess I've reduced my stopping distance by about 5-10% now that I've gone back to Volvo pads.

Sounds like a good way to go. I just like the look of the drilled rotors, that's the main reason for getting them. As long as I get decent pad life and don't have warpage problems, I'll stick with them. But I'll watch and see.
